The European Commission has threatened to fine Microsoft up to 2m euros (£1.36m; $2.4m) a day until it gives rivals more access to its systems.
I believe that its not fair with Microsoft. Specially the way other software GIANTS yes with capital "G" are fetching information from users and that without being noticed by any regulatory authority. I am sure had it been Microsoft doing any thing remotely similar, they would have been fined by now millions of Dollars and would have been made to stop producing such softwares.

Hammad bhai, Microsoft's war against any rival/govt. is always controversial but this time I think EU have some point!
Microsoft is threatened for keeping their systems closed, not for fetching too much information about users. And in this context, EU move is perhaps justified, they are asking MS..
to disclose complete and accurate interface documentation which would allow non-Microsoft work group servers to achieve full interoperability with Windows PCs and servers [BBC]
In this context, Google is doing exactly opposite;
1. Releasing their products in a way that people may plug them in their products.
2. Releasing developer APIs so that developer may add value to Google's products (for instance, google desktop search plug-ins)
when it comes to Microsoft everything is controversial...but lets face it... Microsoft isnt as clean as it shows. They can afford to destroy other businesses and thats exactly what they are doing and have done so in the past. Who can forget the internet browser industry (Netscape) that they single handidly bought down.
and as u just said today "if u cant beat them, join them" :P so lets join Microsoft and say what EU did is wrong.
@ hashim !
dude u got me wrong. That was a joke and i wasnt referring to this context. Besides, dont forget that by default people have biased views about how Microsoft operates. I am not sure abt how things were in the past but for now I believe Microsoft is leading the way in lot of industry wide open standards. Think of SOAP, SALT etc...
And yes dont forget your other favourite IT Giant, they way your personal information is being sent to remote servers might actually be objectionable to many many individuals and organizations.
i wonder if its natural to abuse every big company. Just wait 2 or couple more years and the GIANT with a capital G and a long trail of "ooooo"s will be abused in the same way as microsoft is now days.
